ERA CIPHR Chair: Prof.   Vijayakumar Anand
Prof. Vijayakumar Anand received his Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India in 2015. He was a PBC outstanding postdoctoral fellow at Ben Gurion University, Israel from 2015-2018. From 2019 to 2021, he was a Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise Fellow (Nanophotonics Fellow) at Swinburne University, Australia. He started his position as Associate Professor at University of Tartu in 2022. He has published more than 100 journal articles, conference proceedings and book chapters. He is also an author of a bestselling textbook on Design and Fabrication of Diffractive Optical Elements with MATLAB, published by SPIE press. He has been elected to the editorial board of Nature Springer Applied Physics B: Laser and Optics and Chinese Optics Letters. His current research interests include computational optics, imaging, digital holography, diffractive optics, and microfabrication.

Visiting Professor: Prof. Joseph Rosen
Prof. Joseph Rosen. Joseph Rosen is a Benjamin H. Swig Professor of Optoelectronics with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. He received his BSc, MSc, and DSc degrees in electrical engineering from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in 1984, 1987, and 1992, respectively. He is a fellow of OPTICA (Formerly the Optical Society of America) and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE). His research interests include digital holography, optical microscopy, diffractive optics, interferometry, statistical optics, biomedical optics, optical computing, and image processing. He has co-authored more than 250 book chapters, scientific journal articles, patents and conference publications.

Researcher in Computational imaging:  Dr. Viktor Palm
Viktor Palm received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Tartu, Estonia. He has held different positions at the Institute of Physics, including Senior researcher, Specialist, etc. in the Laboratory of Laser spectroscopy. He has joined our team as a Research fellow in Computational imaging. He is an experimentalist; optics and photonics are the focus of his 40 years of research at the Institute of Physics. He has published more than 40 journal articles.

Postdoctoral Researcher: Dr. Vipin Tiwari

Dr. Vipin Tiwari is an early career researcher. He received his PhD degree in Physics (Applied Optics) from Kumaun University, India, in 2023. Later, he worked as an International Visiting Researcher (short-term) at Chiba University, Japan. He started his position as a Research Fellow at CIPHR group, University of Tartu, Estonia, in November 2023. His current research interests include computational imaging, polarization, holography, and LC-SLM.


Specialist: Tauno Kahro
Tauno Kahro joined as a specialist in material science in November 2023.  He works on the fabrication of optical elements.

Junior Research fellow: Shivasubramanian Gopinath
Shivasubramanian Gopinath joined as a junior research fellow and doctoral student. He received his master's degree in Physics from Madurai Kamaraj University, India. His areas of interest are computational imaging, electronics, and optics.

Junior Research fellow: Agnes Pristy Xavier
Agnes Pristy Xavier joined as a dual Ph.D. student and junior research fellow. She will pursue her doctoral studies for the first two years with Prof. Vijayakumar Anand, CIPHR group, University of Tartu, and the following two years with Prof. Joseph Rosen, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. . She received her master's degree in Physics from Fatima College affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, India. Her areas of interest are computational imaging, electronics, and optics.

Junior Research Fellow: Francis Gracy Arockiaraj

Francis Gracy Arockiaraj joined as a dual Ph.D. student and junior research fellow . She will pursue her doctoral studies for the first two years with Prof. Vijayakumar Anand, CIPHR group, University of Tartu, and the following two years with Prof. Joseph Rosen, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. She obtained her Master's in Physics from American College affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University, India. Her areas of interest are computational imaging, electronics, and optics.

Junior Research Fellow: Narmada Joshi

Narmada Joshi joined as a junior research fellow and doctoral student jointly with Prof. Aile Tamm, former head of thin films laboratory, Institute of Physics, University of Tartu. She worked as a Project Associate in an R&D project in the area of holographic dynamic displays at CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organization (CSIR[1]CSIO), Chandigarh, India, from April 2022 – March 2023. She received her master's degree in Physics from Chaudhary Lal University, India. Her areas of interest are holography, holographic optical elements fabrication, computational Imaging and optics.


Junior Research Fellow:  Eulàlia Puig Vilardell

Eulàlia Puig Vilardell joined as a dual Ph.D. student and junior research fellow. She will pursue her doctoral studies for the first two years with Prof. Vijayakumar Anand, CIPHR group, University of Tartu, and the following two years with Dr. Darius Gailevičius, Senior Researcher at the Vilnius University Laser Research Center, Lithuania. She received two master's degrees in the frame of the EUROPHOTONICS Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD): a master's diploma in Physics: Optics and Photonics from Aix-Marseille University (France), and a master's diploma in Laser Technology from Vilnius University (Lithuania). She worked in 2024 as a Project Specialist in the Laser Research Center, Physics Faculty, Vilnius University on the fabrication of 3D gradient photonic structures via laser lithography and its characterization.

Her areas of interest are photonics, optics, laser technology, computational imaging and holography.


Project Coordinator: Prof. Kaido Reivelt


Prof. Kaido Reivelt defended his Ph.D. in University of Tartu. (optics and spectroscopy) in 2003. He defended his dissertation under the supervision of Academician Peeter Saari. He was an extraordinary researcher at the Institute of Physics, University of Tartu. Since 2005 he was the director of studies at the University of Tartu Institute of Physics. He works in the field of wave optics with propagation-invariant wave fields ( X-wave ). Kaido Reivelt is the coordinator of the environmental program GLOBE Estonia.

Project Manager: Tiia Lillemaa
Tiia Lillemaa is a Project Manager in University of Tartu with more than 20 years of project and human resources management experience in FP7, H2020, ESA, and national funding. Last two years she worked for the Grant Office in the University of Tartu as Foreign Funds Coordinator of H2020 and Horizon Europe projects. She has been involved in recruiting incoming researchers since 2008. From 2015 to 2020 she was an EURAXESS network coordinator in the Tartu Observatory. She have organized lots of international seminars, training events and conferences for researchers over last 20 years.

                                     Research manager: Aravind Simon. JR
Mr. Aravind Simon received his Masters's degree in Computer Applications from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, India in 2005. He held many positions of importance such as the Vice-Principal of St. Joseph Institute of Information Technology and Deputy Controller of Examinations at St. Joseph University of Tanzania until January 2022. He started his new position as the ERA Chair project Research Manager in March 2022. He is interested in MATLAB, deep learning, software development, and administration.
